-------------------------------------------------------------------- COLLOQUIUM OF THE COMPUTATIONAL MATERIALS SCIENCE CENTER College of Science (CDS Department CSI 898-Sec 001) -------------------------------------------------------------------- The quest for optical metamaterials E. N. Economou Institute of Electronic Structure and Lasers FORTH, Crete, Greece A brief summary of the basic features of the so called Left-Handed Metamaterials will presented together with the derivation of their fundamental electromagnetic properties. For the operational frequency range to reach the optical regime the size of the artificial unit must be in the nanoregime, i.e., below 100 nm. There the ohmic losses become very significant and the kinetic energy of the current carrying electrons surpasses the magnetic energy; both these effects present severe obstacles to our path for fabricating artificial materials with amazing optical properties. Several attempts to overcome these obstacles will be discussed. Monday, April 27, 2009 4:30 pm Room 301, Research I, Fairfax Campus Refreshments will be served at 4:15 PM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Find the schedule at www.cmasc.gmu.edu/seminar/schedule.html --------------------------------------------------------------------
