----------------------------------------------------------------------- COLLOQUIUM OF THE LABORATORY FOR COMPUTER DESIGN OF MATERIALS Institute for Computational Sciences and Informatics CSI 929 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ An Introduction to Global Magnetospheric Modeling Daniel S. Spicer Institute for Computational Sciences and Informatics and NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center An introduction to the global modeling of the Earth's magnetosphere will be presented with special emphasis on the use of the magnetohydrodynamic approximation, the world-wide status of these efforts, and future plans. In particular, examples from 2D and 3D MHD simulations will be used to illustrate a number of key issues in magnetospheric physics associated with the phenomenon of reconnection such as flux transfer events, substorms, and the ionospheric response to them.
