----------------------------------------------------------------------- COLLOQUIUM OF THE LABORATORY FOR COMPUTER DESIGN OF MATERIALS Institute for Computational Sciences and Informatics CSI 929 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CyberChemistry, or Just how fast are chemists anyway? John Rumble National Institute of Standards and Technology Gaithersburg, MD The Internet explosion has obviously come to chemistry, with effects that are becoming quite familiar: virtual libraries, daily international collaborations, instant access to new results, and cyberconferences. Chemistry already was the most computerized science; and now the Net. What does this all mean? How will these changes really affect chemistry? Will we have niftier new compounds, better reaction pathways, more complete sets of properties? In this talk I will examine CyberChemistry from several perspectives and look at some trends that seem to be developing. Topics will include computational chemistry, data estimation schemes, online journals, online handbooks, combinatorial chemistry, and new types of collaboration. I will also identify some major bottlenecks that, if left unaddressed, will prevent taking advantage of the new technology, as well as some potential solutions to those bottlenecks.
