----------------------------------------------------------------------- SEMINAR OF THE LABORATORY FOR COMPUTER DESIGN OF MATERIALS Institute for Computational Sciences and Informatics CSI 929 (http://science.gmu.edu/physics) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Aerogels: Old Materials with New Properties Debra R. Rolison Surface Chemistry Branch,Naval Research Laboratory Washington D. C. The ability to solve a range of materials science-based issues with bulk, homogeneous materials is reaching technical limits. Aerogels are a class of advanced materials, known since the 1930s, with ultralow density, ultrahigh surface areas, and mesoporosity. Aerogels are nanoscale domains networked with 10-50 nm pores. This seminar will review some of the attributes and properties of aerogels and discuss some of the results in our program at the Naval Research Laboratory to prepare air-stable, non-carbon conductive aerogels.
