----------------------------------------------------------------- SEMINAR OF THE LABORATORY FOR COMPUTER DESIGN OF MATERIALS Institute for Computational Sciences and Informatics CSI 929 (http://science.gmu.edu/physics/) ----------------------------------------------------------------- The New Workplace: An Opportunity for Physics John S. Rigden American Institute of Physics It is obvious to everyone that the place of physics in society has changed over the past five years. The physics-support environment, dominated for the past 40 years by Federal sources, has also changed and will continue to change in the short term. If the discipline of physics is to remain a vital presence on the university campus, it must adapt to this new environment or suffer the consequences. Physics alumni have a story to tell us; this story together with the evolving character of the workplace presents physicists with an opportunity, a significant opportunity. To take advantage of this opportunity, we must reconceptualize ?the physicist? and recalibrate both our perceptions and expectations. Monday , October 21 1996 5:00 pm Room 206, Science & Tech.
