-------------------------------------------------------------------- COLLOQUIUM OF THE LABORATORY FOR COMPUTER DESIGN OF MATERIALS School of Computational Sciences (CSI 898-Sec 001) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Density Functional Theory - What Kind of a Theory is it? Dale D. Koelling Office of Science, US Department of Energy, Germantown, MD C. Vosko often started his talks with the observation: "There are only three reasons to study DFT: Correlation, correlation, correlation!" Yet, its applications are often referred to as the single particle picture and, in spite of its spectacular successes, people often cheerfully refer to the failure of the single particle picture or DFT. By examining an overview of the theory, we will identify some of the places where choices made or misapplications cause trouble. I hope to convince you that Density Functional Theory is a lot more robust than generally believed, but also more intricate. October 24, 4:30 pm Room 206, Science & Tech. I, Fairfax Campus Refreshments will be served at 4:15 PM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Find the schedule at http://www.scs.gmu.edu/lcdm/seminar/schedule.html --------------------------------------------------------------------
