------------------------------------------------------------------------ SEMINAR OF THE DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS GROUP Institute for Computational Sciences and Informatics ------------------------------------------------------------------------ STUDYNIG DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS WITH MLAB: AN ADVANCED MATHEMATICAL AND STATISTICAL MODEL SYSTEM" GARY KNOTT Civilized Software, Inc. Bethesda, MD Topics in dynamic systems will be presented in a computational context. Stability and stiffness will be discussed via the Belusov-Zhabotinsky oscillating chemical reactions model. The computation of Poincare sections will be discussed. Other examples, including the Hodgkin-Huxley nerve-axon differential model and electric circuit dynamics will be reviewed. Computations will be done with the MLAB software. MLAB is an advanced mathematical and statistical modeling system originally developed at the NIH. MLAB has over 400 built-in functions applicable to a wide variety of data analysis and experimental mathematical problems in the sciences. It runs on PCs, Macintoshes, and UNIX systems, including NeXTstep. MLAB is particularly suitable for mathematical and statistical computation in a wide area of application areas. MLAB has been used for modeling and model-fitiing problems such as multiple site ligand binding analysis, chemical kinetics and pharmacological compartmental analysis, drug combination analysis, spectral analysis via the SVD method, delta-modulation data compression, charged particle configurations, statistical test power computations, Voronoi diagrams and spatial statistics, and ultracentrifuge data analysis. MLAB has powerful facilities for solving and curve-fitting systems of ordinary differential equations. Monday , 3 October 1994 5:30 pm Room 310, Science & Tech.
