------------------------------------------------------------------------ COLLOQUIUM OF THE LABORATORY FOR COMPUTER DESIGN OF MATERIALS Institute for Computational Sciences and Informatics CSI 898-Sec 001 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Unusual Magnetism on Surfaces Stephen Hellberg Center for Computational Materials Science, Naval Research Laboratory The modern theory of electrons at surfaces is discussed, with emphasis on the interactions between electrons. On surfaces, the reduced dimensionality naturally enhances the effects of the interactions, sometimes leading to the formation of novel phases. I will discuss recent experiments on a family of triangular surface lattices, and present calculations indicating the formation of an unusual magnetic order on these surfaces. Monday , April 12 1999 4:30 pm Room 206, Science & Tech. I Refreshments will be served. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (http://www.csi.gmu.edu/lcdm/seminar/schedule.html)
